Sayoni Mondal

Sayoni Mondal is a Project Research Assistant at the Centre of Excellence for a Unified AI-Enabled Craft Ecosystem Platform, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), supported by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

She joined the Centre in May 2026, following her tenure as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at St. Xavier’s College, Burdwan. She previously served as a Guest Lecturer at the same institution and has been actively involved in teaching, academic administration, student activities, and institutional responsibilities. She has also served several times as an Internal and External Examiner for the University of Burdwan.

She completed her B.Sc (opens in a new tab). in Geography (Honours) from Lady Brabourne College, University of Calcutta, securing First Class First Position, and her M.Sc (opens in a new tab). in Geography with specialization in Geomorphology from Ballygunge Science College, University of Calcutta, securing First Class Second Position. She also holds a B.Ed. from the Institute of Education for Women, Hastings House, Kolkata, and is UGC-NET qualified.

She has demonstrated strong academic achievement from an early stage, securing 17th position in West Bengal in the Higher Secondary Examination, along with 3rd position in Purba Bardhaman District and 1st position in Memari Block-I.

She has presented her research on global academic platforms, including the Annual International Conference of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), London. She has also participated in various academic and professional development programmes, including training by IIT Kharagpur, IIRS-ISRO, and NIDM.

Her research interests include geomorphology, socio-cultural landscapes, environmental sustainability, handicrafts and craft communities, GIS and spatial approaches, and human–environment interactions. Her current work particularly explores the intersections of craft, culture, community, spatiality, sustainability, and technology.
