Biography
Debajyoti Swain Acharya is a Project Research Assistant at the Centre of Excellence for a Unified AI-Enabled Craft Ecosystem Platform at IIT Kharagpur. He is a postgraduate in Microbiology with a strong academic foundation, research orientation, and a focus on interdisciplinary applications of science. He holds a B.Sc (opens in a new tab). in Microbiology from Midnapore College (Autonomous) and an M.Sc (opens in a new tab). in Microbiology from Vidyasagar University.
His academic and research expertise spans microbiological analysis, bacterial and fungal isolation, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular biology techniques, microscopy, staining protocols, gel electrophoresis, PCR, spectrophotometry, and bioinformatics. He has extensive laboratory experience in bacterial culture maintenance, aseptic laminar airflow operations, column chromatography, rotary evaporation, and the environmental microbial analysis of air, water, and soil. His research portfolio includes investigating airborne bacterial and fungal diversity alongside exploring microbiological frameworks for sustainable applications.
In tandem with his microbiological expertise, Debajyoti actively pursues interdisciplinary research bridging science, technology, sustainability, and traditional knowledge. Through his role at the Centre of Excellence at IIT Kharagpur, he works extensively with Indian handicrafts, artisan practices, traditional materials, indigenous tools, processing methodologies, and craft documentation. This engagement drives his focus on deciphering the scientific principles underpinning handicrafts and leveraging evidence-based methodologies to advance the preservation, development, and sustainable evolution of traditional crafts.
His professional responsibilities include research documentation, project coordination, scientific writing, and the development of specialized toolkits and knowledge resources for craft ecosystems. Combining a rigorous background in the life sciences with applied experience in cultural technologies, he is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary initiatives that unite scientific rigor, traditional craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.
