Shristi O Anusandhan: 3rd Toolkit Workshop on Mud-Based Craft Traditions

The Centre of Excellence for Unified AI-Enabled Craft Ecosystem Platform, IIT Kharagpur, an initiative of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is organising the 3rd Toolkit Workshop under Shristi O Anusandhan, dedicated to Mud-Based Craft Traditions of India, from 14th to 23rd September 2026.

The workshop will be hosted at the Rajendra Misra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship & CoE at ABIF Building, IIT Kharagpur and will bring together artisans, researchers, designers, academicians and other stakeholders to explore the rich material, technical, cultural and scientific knowledge embedded within India’s mud-based craft traditions.

As part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts towards the documentation and development of a unified AI-enabled craft ecosystem, the workshop will focus on understanding craft materials, tools, processes, techniques and practitioner knowledge through direct engagement and interdisciplinary inquiry. Particular emphasis will be placed on exploring the science behind craft—including material behaviour, traditional techniques, process dependencies and the experiential knowledge developed by artisans over generations.

The workshop will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, hands-on learning, systematic documentation and interdisciplinary collaboration, while contributing to the preservation and contemporary understanding of India’s diverse craft heritage.
